There's a girl with no shoes. She is wandering through America, an she stops at a little town and walks down the main street. The first shop she goes into, she asks for a drink of water. The shopkeeper, a woman, asks her if she's local, because she doesn't have any shoes on. The girl insists that she's not, but the woman keeps asking her if she's such and such's daughter, or such-and-such's cousin. But she gets her the water. Eventually she starts getting angry, because it's clear she's not local, so the girl offers to pay her for the water, and this gets her very angry and she tells her to go across the road and spend her money on some shoes. The girl leaves the shop. She goes out the shop and walks down a little bit, and stands a little bit in an alleyway to drink the water. A man comes up to her and makes chit-chat with her. He seems ok at first, but eventually he starts making insinuations. It's clear he thinks she's a prostitute. She backs away and the man follows her. Just as she gets out of the alleyway, a policeman rescues her and the man goes off. He's one of these farty policemen who's very proud of the fact that nothing bad ever happens, at least not with him knowing. He asks her why she doesn't wear any shoes, but she refuses to say, and this gets his policeman's back up. He says he'll be watching her and if she causes any more trouble in town she'll be out of it quicker than you can say... She wanders down the street a bit more, until she gets to a church. It's really hot midday so she goes inside for a rest and sits on a pew. The priest comes up and sits beside her. And he asks what's been troubling her. She says that everywhere she goes, people treat her badly because she has no shoes on. The priest tells her that jesus came without shoes or possessions and that upset quite a few people. He also says that people in small towns are afraid of anything strange and upsetting and she should try to forgive them. He asks her if she's a christian, and she tells him that she's not, and this annoys him, that she's come into his church while not being a christian. His all-forgiving attitude seems to have gone, so she she leaves the church. She wanders down the street, this time, she goes into the Bank, so she can receieve a money order, but the cashier refuses to serve her because she has no shoes. She asks how can she buy shoes, if she's nto allowed to get any money from the bank, but the cashier is a prim and proper woman and won't even entertain it. So with just a few dollars in her pocket, and night starting to fall, she goes in search of something to eat, and lands up at the Interstate, and a roadside diner. In the diner are a lot of travellers and truckers, nobody gives her a second glance, and she gets some coffee and a sandwich. As she's sitting there, she sees a few people from the village coming towards the cafe, obviously there's some sort of party arranged there, and she tries to get out the door before they get there. but it's too late, they all come in the door. One of them starts picking on her, asking her why she's bothering them. And eventually she says a big load of bad things about the town, about how they've treated her, she hasn't done anything except wear no shoes. Some of the villagers are saying she must be a slut, a beggar or a hobo. Why would someone who is travelling across country wear no shoes? She says he just wants to leave, and as she's going out the door, one of the villagers pushes her, and she falls over, and her trouser legs roll up, revealing the fact that she doesn't have any feet - just prosthetic legs. She gets up, leaves the diner, and walks up the interstate, away from the town. The end.
